Needles in a pincushion

A couple of months ago I noticed my little lap pillow for smocking seemed to have a needle that had worked its way down inside. The cover was also getting worn and needed to be replaced. I decide it was time to open the pillow up and retrieve the needle and make a new cover. Upon opening it I found not one or two needles but A LOT of needles had unbeknownst made their way inside. Being curious if the same thing had happened with a large pin cushion purchased at a thrift sale a number of years ago, I opened it up, what a surprise! I found enough to filled three felt pieces with needle after needle. Iā€™m quite sure all these did not originate with me. But I have quite a collection now! This pincushion was filled with crushed walnut shells and the pillow with polyfill. The needles were much sharper and shiny looking when sticking in the shells where the needles resting in the polyfill were dull and rough. I plan to make some pincushions in the future and already have a nice supply of crushed walnut shells. Now I just need the time to create. . . but I have plenty of needles!
